Sabine Duus is an emerging contemporary circus artist, performer and mover, specializing in aerial rope and straps.
Born and raised in a small city in Eastern Germany, Saxony, Sabine started her search for herself and her place and role in the world at an early age. Volunteering in different areas of social work from young age, she tried to find her calling in different sports and artistic disciplines such as athletics, football, martial arts, swimming, climbing, drawing, sewing and different musical instruments such as flute, guitar, percussion, bass and voice. She eventually started to study special education at the University of Leipzig, where she graduated with a Bachelor‘s degree. Still feeling restless, Sabine started on a 4 year long journey through Europe and most of all Central America, where she had her first contact with contemporary and urban circus. Immediately drawn into the spell of this brave new world, she soon started to experiment with different disciplines like juggling clubs, hats and pois, to riding the unicycle.
What initially was meant to be a simple trip from Central to South America, soon became a long-term residency in El Salvador, where she fell in love with the culture and the people. Together with friends she formed Buruka Colectiva, the first all-female circus and juggling collective in Central America. Together, they created several performances and spectacles, amongst others touring through the country to promote a newly created institution for peaceful conflict resolution, Transformando Conflictos.
As part of the program, the group gave workshops in social hot spots and women's prisons with a special profile for female gang members. The Buruka Colectiva’s work earned national recognition when they received the Atenea de las Artes prize in the category of urban artist of the year.
During her stay in El Salvador, Sabine finally held an aerial silk in her hands for the first time – and it was love at first grip. It did not take much time until aerials in general became her main focus.
Back in Berlin Sabine devoted her free time to training, participating in workshops and in masterclasses, exploring different aerial disciplines such as aerial rope and straps while working as a social worker. Soon she discovered that aerial rope in fact was her perfect match and from then on first choice of aerial apparatus.
In 2020 she decided to battle the odds and apply for circus school at DIE ETAGE - Schule für die darstellenden und bildenden Künste e.V. and Seneca Intensiv – Bildungsprogramme für künstlerische Bewegung, where she spent the past three years dedicating herself to developing a unique style and acts characterized by dynamic motions and twirls, rolling up and down and up again on the rope, wrapping herself up, unwrapping again with electrifying drops to just end in time for a strong and controlled finale.
Sabine is versatile, full of passion and charisma and lives and works guided by an all or nothing attitude. The rope and the straps are her counterparts, her partners in crime, her friends and medium of expression.
Sabine is always open for collaborations, booking or teaching requests and looking forward to hear from you.
